Virginia rail        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like their close relative the sora, Virginia rails are ubiquitous but secretive residents of swamps and marshes throughout much of North America.   Like soras, they have loud and easily recognizable calls, including a kidick kidick 'song' and a descending woink woink woink call.   These rails were photographed at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California.  Some were running back and forth across small areas of open water; others were casually feeding and calling along the edge of a reedbed.
