Like all loons, red-throated loons (called 'divers' in Europe) have a colorful breeding plumage and a more subdued winter plumage.. Their haunting calls, like those of common loons and Pacific loons, are familiar summer sounds on lakes in the far north. These are summer-plumage birds, photographed near a nest close to the 'Fresh-water Lake Road' at Barrow, Alaska, and in a small lake on the Glenn Highway in south-central Alaska. Pictures of a bird that summered in southern California are here. In all seasons, red-throated loons usually carry their bills tilted slightly upwards. |
