Buller's shearwater        Images © Mark A. Chappell

A Southern Hemisphere breeder (islands near New Zealand), Buller's shearwaters make huge nonbreeding migrations across the Pacific basin and are fairly common off of California in the northern hemisphere summer and autumn.   They are strikingly marked with bright white underparts and a distinctive 'M' pattern on the upperwing.   These were photographed on a pelagic trip several kilometers offshore in Monterey Bay, California.
