These little butterflies were abundant around flowering buckwheat (Eriogonum) in the San Jacinto Mountains of southern California. Like many butterflies, especially blues, they usually perch with the wings tightly folded, making it difficult to get an image of the upper wing surface. They were reasonably approachable but would not sit still for long -- except when mating. This page shows the similar Melissa blue, which was common in the same habitat. |
