Red rock skimmer (Platothemis lineatipes)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Red rock skimmers, as their name implies, tend to sit on rocks in streams.   The males (bright red) were photographed in in exactly that habitat in Madera Canyon, Arizona.  The female was perched on some vegetation at the bank of a large pond at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California.
