Queen butterfly        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This queen butterfly was feeding in low shrubs on an overcast spring day in Two Trees Canyon in Riverside, California.   Queens strongly resemble monarchs from the underside, but have fewer black markings on the upperwings (not visible here).   Since I was trying to photograph birds at the time, I used a big telephoto lens and a 2X converter as a 1000 mm 'macro lens'.
