Dogbane leaf beetle, or 'June beetle'        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Various kinds of brightly colored beetles, many of them scarabs, are common in much of the US.  They are often called 'June beetles', and although there is a formally-named June beetle (Cotinis nitida), the term is used for many different species.  This colorful beetle, which was photographed near Manhattan, Kansas, is probably a dogbane leaf-beetle, (Chrysochus auratus) .
