Bleached skimmers are named for their overall pale appearance.   Old males, like some of the individuals shown here, often have the powder-blue 'pruinescence' on the abdomen rubbed off during mating activity, leaving a dark area.   They are dry-country insects; I took the pictures with a long telephoto lens on a scrubby alkali flat near Bishop, California.
