The 'araneus' group are large, common orb-weaving spiders with prominent globular abdomens.  Many of them are quite similar in appearance and hard for a non-specialist to identify with certainty (I'm not sure what species this one is).  The pedipalps and eight small eyes can be seen on the front of the cephalothorax.
