Lorquin's admiral are striking, medium-sized butterflies found in a variety of habitats.   Like many butterflies, the patterns on the upper- and undersides of the wings differ dramatically, so the animal looks very different if it is basking with wings open (below) instead of resting with wings closed (above).   These were photographed along Convict Creek in the eastern Sierra Nevada of California.
