Sequoia forest        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The giant sequoia, or Sierra Big Trees, are the largest and among the tallest and oldest trees on Earth.   Walking through a sequoia grove is a wonderful experience.   But I find it very difficult to do them justice in a photograph.   These pictures were taken in Yosemite's Mariposa Grove.   One is a wideangle view of several trees, using all sorts of tricks to get acceptable exposure on the sunlit crowns and the deeply-shaded trunks.   Another (upper right) is the 'Grizzly Giant' tree.   The others show a huge, scarred sequoia trunks; the image at bottom, showing a massive sequoia rising among numerous firs and cedars, is perhaps my best effort.
