Like many national parks, Yosemite has a policy of letting natural fires burn unchecked, unless they get close to structures or other critical areas. Fire is a natural component of most forests in western North America and many tree species -- including sequoias -- depend on it for successful reproduction. These burned trunks were in the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoia trees in the southwestern corner of Yosemite. |
