Patagonia is well and rightly known for being very windy. During a one-week visit to Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in southern Chile, we had only about one hour of calm, still air. Fortunately, we happened to be crossing the Weber Bridge on the Rio Paine at that moment, and I was able to get some photos of the south face of the Paine massif reflected in the river. The same scene (from a slighly different nearby viewpoint) on a typically windy day is shown below. The unusual water color of the wind-stirred river stems from the glacial meltwater that feeds most of the lakes and streams in the park. |
