Monterey pines are one of the commonest trees on the planet: in forestry plantations. They are cultivated around the world for pulpwood and timber; I've seen them in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. However, they are native to a fairly small strip of coastal mountains in central California, and here they are under some threat from disease, fires, and habitat loss. I grew up with them on the Monterey Peninsula, and their characteristic shapes always bring back childhood memories. These wee photographed on a winter dawn in Pebble Beach. |
