This panorama was stitched together from 5 images made at the Eilson Visitor Center in Denali National Park, about 50 km northeast of the peak of Denali (McKinley, if you prefer the 'new' name). The south (leftmost) peak of Denali, the highest point in North America at 6194 meters (20,320 feet), is several hundred meters taller than the north (right) peak. The south peak rises about 5,500 m (18,000 feet) above its base, one of the largest mountain massifs on the planet. Alpine tundra can be seen in the foreground; the deceptively small-looking mountain at right is Mt. Foraker, which is the second-highest peak in the Alaska range at 5,304 m (17,400 feet). |
