Cactus blossoms 3: barrel cactus (Ferocactus, Echinocactus), etc.        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The various kinds of barrel cactus are greatly appreciated by many cactus lovers.   Their flowers are typically born on a 'crown' on the top of the plant, as shown above.   I'm pretty sure the species shown on this page include California barrel (F. cylindraceus; F. acanthodes), fishook barrel, with thick, curved spines (F. wislizeni), and golden barrel (E. grusonii).   All were growing at the Living Desert Reserve, near Palm Desert.

Other pages show Opuntias, Mammillaria & Cereus, and Echinocereus flowers.
