Canterbury bells (California bluebell)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Good rains in the late winter and spring of 2005 and 2008 created a bonanza of wildflowers in southern California.  These Canterbury bells or California bluebells (Phacelia minor) were photographed at several locations near Riverside and Lake Elsinore.   Several images have yellow or orange backgrounds, due to a profusion of goldfields or California poppies.   A close relative, the desert bluebell (P. campanularia) also occurs in southern California, but it is found mainly in dry inland areas, as its name implies.
