Hermit warbler        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Hermit warblers are birds of northwestern forests that pass through California on migration; many overwinter in conifers.   I photographed this in Monterey and Pacific Grove, California (the flying bird landed on a boat several kilometers offshore).   Breeding-plumage males have a brilliant yellow face and crown, with a black rim and throat.   More photos of this species are here.
