Black-bellied plovers (breeding plumage)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like many shorebirds, black-bellied plovers undertake long migrations and have striking annual plumage changes.  This species breeds in the Arctic and many of them winter along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.  These photos show perched birds on Southern California beaches in San Diego and Orange Counties, and at the Salton Sea (all are typical winter habitat).   These are partially molted into the striking black and white breeding plumage (some almost completely; some showing only a few black feathers); another page shows images of the subdued winter plumage.

This page shows winter-plumage black-bellied plovers in flight, and this page shows flying summer-plumage birds.
