Black-bellied plovers in flight        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like many shorebirds, black-bellied plovers undertake long migrations, and they are sleek, graceful fliers with subtle but attractive patterns.  The white tail and rump are good field marks, as are the black 'armpits' at the base of the underwing.   All these winter-plumage birds were photographed as they flew in front of the surf and beach-washed foam from a winter storm in Pacific Grove, California.

This page shows black-bellied plovers (mainly in winter plumage) at rest, and this page shows breeding-plumage birds in flight.
