American oystercatcher        Images © Mark A. Chappell

American oystercatchers are close relatives of the west-coast black oystercatcher, but are more often found on sandy beaches and mudflats (the black oystercatcher is usually on exposed rocks).   Both species have fleshly legs, staring yellow eyes, and brilliant red, waxy bills.   I found the ones above on a beach at Ft. DeSoto Park, Florida; the bird in the lower photos (with a black oystercatcher in the background in the right image) was a stray, foraging along the coast at La Jolla, California, and the flying birds were at Honeymoon Island, Florida.   Other photos of this species are here.
