Flying shorebirds        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Shorebirds of various species often congregate in dense roosting flocks when not feeding.   In flight, they show amazing precision and apparent coordination in direction changes, maneuvers, etc.   These birds (mainly western sandpipers, with a few individuals of other species thrown in) were at the Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California.
