RESEARCH INTERESTS

Perception of Talkers with Accents. I will focus my dissertation work on the role and availability of talker characteristics during the perception of accented speech. This interest stems from my involvement of foreign languages and the questions that arise while learning new languages, as well as, recent research our lab has completed on speech perception.

Language Alignment (Convergence).  (1) I am presently working in a laboratory conducting research on phonetic alignment to visual and auditory speech cues. (2) For my master’s project, I focused on whether generalization of alignment occurs to new words after becoming familiar with a speaker’s articulatory style. (3) I hope to apply research in this area to gain better understanding of the mechanisms underlying gestural drift and to improve foreign language learning.

Cross-Modal Speech Perception. Research we have completed in the area of cross-modal speech perception shows evidence that individuals who lipread a speaker are better able to hear the speech of that speaker in a later auditory speech-in-noise task. (1) Based on this evidence, I will perform research to see if these “speaker familiarity effects” translate to phonetic alignment and if the visual speech cues can be used as predictors of the performance of foreign language learners.
