Weathered Early Homonid Tools & Footgear Below Lower Pleistocene
Sedimentary Geology In Southeastern Kansas
{Contact}

          In Sedgwick County, southeastern Kansas William Reager discovered Footgear with an apparent hominid Footprint that he had washed out of the ground with a garden hose.  A local archeologist recommended contacting the State Geoarcheologist.  Further examination of the position of the toes in the footprint, as indicated by dimples through a flexible leather sole, led to the discovery of an extended hallux (= big toe).  The soil sample with the footprint was rechecked and it was found that the flake of compressed clay loess compacted by the hallux had survived intact.  Also found was a lone hair on the surface along with smeared dermal ridges.  The footprint’s length was calculated to be 9.75 inches long.  Other collections of the Ogallala quartzite and other rocks from the surface of the surrounding ploughed fields produced two crude hand axes along with about four tons of chert.  The culture that resided in the area appeared to resemble the Oldowan Type.

          An effort to check the DNA of the hair sample ruled out any possibility of there being sufficient material left after just the minimum length of time that the sample had been buried at the site.  It is probably too old for C-14 dating as the last Australopithecus dated over a million years ago, and the abducted hallux is too old for Homo erectus. Further examination of the site continued, but this time all artifacts that have been found were allowed to remain in situ, and removal of material has been confined to already displaced rocks that were ploughed up by the local farmers.
