Lorquin’s Admiral, Limenitis lorquini <LEP119>
This species occurs on the West Coast. The upperside is basically blackish brown, crossed by bands of
large creamy spots. It is
distinguished from the other banded admirals by its orange forewing
tips. The males establish and defend
territories, often on willow branches.
The one in the drawing is shown visiting spreading dogbane, a preferred
nectar source for many butterflies. |
