QuickTime Videos and Interactive
3-D Models

This demonstration is included to stimulate ideas about new ways to present material for the web. A high resolution file (184 MB) is available on CD upon request. Feedback about this and other models that would be helpful can be emailed directly to the webmaster.

If you do not have Quicktime, instructions for downloading are included after the links.

Interactive Version:

1) Open QuickTime player (see below for how to download). Go to File > Open URL and type (or cut and paste) the following URL into the field:
- http://lamar.colostate.edu/~insects/pages/teachingresources/quicktime/caterpillar.obj
6) The catepillar will appear in a window.
- click the + - buttons to zoom in and out and use the arrow keys on your keyboard to rotate the image. The image can also be rotated to the right by clicking on the black background near the right margin.
7) The file can be saved to your own hard drive, which may be desirable for those with slower connections.

About the Caterpillar
Photography and animation
by Joe Mendoza, Colorado State University, Instructional Services. Photographs were taken with a Nikon -D1 camera. The composite was made from 36 shots and a full 360 degree rotation is possible with additional photographs. The movie was produced with Quicktime VR Studio from Apple on a Mac computer. Thanks to Greg Walker for the use of the caterpillar and his assistance on this project.


Download the QuickTime player from the web for free.
1) Click here to get a QuickTime player: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
2) Once at the QuickTime download page enter your email address and select your operating system (Windows or Macintosh).
3) Click on Download Quicktime.
4) Go through setup and choose a folder to download the QuickTime setup program into.
5) Go to the installer destination folder in your hard drive and double click the installer icon to install QuickTime player.
6) The QuickTime player will be placed in that folder.

Now that you have obtained a player (or if you already have one), viewing Insect Physiology Online material is easy.
1) Open the QuickTime player.
2) In the QuickTime player window go to File > Open URL and type in (or cut and paste) one of the URL's above.
3) The 3-D model will open in a separate window.
