One of the strongest earthquakes in years rattles Southern California, damaging areas of Kern County

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake centered in the Kern County city of Ridgecrest caused structural damage and injuries near the epicenter, and rattled nerves across Southern California and into Nevada on the Fourth of July holiday.

While aftershocks rattled the region throughout the afternoon Thursday, the shaking widely reported across the Coachella Valley from the strongest quake in at least 20 years is likely the only effect on the low desert.

Abhijit Ghosh, a professor of geophysics at the University of California, Riverside, said the quake isn’t likely to have a significant impact on seismic activity in the Coachella Valley, which sits on the San Andreas Fault.
