Basel is in the same region as Alsace, France, which historically shares dominance by both Germany and France. The Rhein River flows through the city and there are many picturesque and ancient bridges and beautiful medieval houses and narrow streets. The Rathaus is unique in style for this part of Central Europe. Open air markets selling fruits and vegetables are scattered throughout the center of town. The beer is of exceptional quality.
