The fringe ogam on this rendition of
a flying horse reads closely to Old Norse Nefni
Sleipnir ="its name is
Sleipnir." The reference is to the magic steed
Sleipnir, obtained by Loki for Woden. This is another example of the
persistence of an artistic and mythological tradition, for the carving is in
a nonresistant rock in the Milk River valley, Alberta, Canada, and must have
been executed within recent centuries (Fell 1982). |
