Taking long-lens photos of the sun can be risky, but when the sun is right at the horizon, much of its light energy is filtered out by the atmosphere.   These photographs were taken on the Monterey Peninsula, California (above) and Florida (below), but could have been made pretty much anywhere on a coastline.
