Currant bushes, White Mountains        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The 'crest' of the White Mountains is a complex geological mixture that includes pale dolomite rock along with dark granite boulders, with sparse, low-growing vegetation consisting mainly of arid alpine grasslands.   Above treeline, many of the granite boulder piles shelter currant bushes (Ribes) that turn bright gold as autumn approaches.   I took this photograph in the late afternoon on the slopes of Mt. Barcroft at about 12,000 feet (3600 meters).   Sheep Mountain can be seen in the distance.
