Dolomite hills, White Mountains        Images © Mark A. Chappell

These eroded hills of pale dolomite rock, bare of most vegetation, are at 3,400 meters in the White Mountains of eastern California.   I photographed them in the low light of a setting sun (upper left), near dawn (upper right and below).   In the image at upper right, the mountain visible on the horizon is Telescope Peak, on the western rim of Death Valley.
