Moonrise, Uluru        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The huge red monolith called Uluru (by native Australians) and later Ayer's Rock (by European colonialists) is one of Australia's best-known landmarks. It rises out of arid scrublands almost in the exact center of the continent, a few hundred kilometers southwest of Alice Springs. Probably millions of pictures of Uluru have been taken over the years; this is my contribution, made a few minutes before sunset on a warm winter day. It's a computer-generated composite: there WAS a full moon exactly where this one is on the image, but it was a lot smaller. To improve the picture's impact, I substituted a larger moon image taken with a telephoto lens. The intensely saturated colors are pretty much as I remember them -- Uluru glows deep red in the light of a setting sun.
