Ibex Dunes        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Ibex Dunes are a little-known collection of moderately-sized sand dunes in the extreme southeastern corner of Death Valley National Park.   They aren't visited by many people, since they are a hike of a mile or more from the end of a rough dirt road, far away from the better-known attractions of Death Valley.   A friend and I spent most of a clear, breezy December day at Ibex Dunes and encountered no one else.   We stayed until dusk, and the play of light on the ridges and valleys changed constantly throughout the day, from stark mid-day contrasts to soft pastel pinks shortly after sunset. Both of us were surprised at how often we preferred the intimate view offered by long lenses to wide, sweeping vistas.   Some of these images were enhanced through the use of a polarizing filter.
Some years later, the same friend and I visited another very isolated dune field, Cadiz Dunes.   They were also lovely and deserted.
