Sundog        Images © Mark A. Chappell

'Sundogs' are relatively common in polar regions.   They form when ice crystals in the atmosphere catch the sun's rays and refract them at a constant angle, creating the appearance of a ring around the sun.  This one formed at Palmer Station, Antarctica.  You need a very wide-angle lens to capture an image of an entire sundog (my 20mm was barely wide enough).
