Varying lemming

Varying lemmings are mottled brownish in sumer, but in winter they molt into a thick coat of whitish fur, as shown here. Although they spend most of their time under the snow, they occasionally come up to the surface for brief periods (as this one is doing). The photo was taken in April, near Barrow, Alaska.
