Ice cliff at sunset        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Palmer Station is a small US research base on Anvers Island (near the Antarctic Peninsula). Palmer is perched on the shore of Arthur Harbor, which is bounded by the Anvers Island ice sheet. On clear evenings, the light of the setting sun briefly turns the glacier face into a display of bright colors. This picture was taken in spring, before the complete breakup of the ice covering the surface of Arthur Harbor (in the foreground).
