Crevasses, Anvers Island        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The US Antarctic base at Palmer Station sits on a small peninsula of Anvers Island, one of the few parts of Anvers not covered by a thick ice sheet. When this glacial ice approaches the coast, it begins to split and form deep crevasses, a few of which can be seen in this sunset view.
