Spotted fritillary        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This spotted fritillary (Fritillaria atropurpurea) was growing in a high-altitude meadow in Yellowstone Park.   It was a challenge to photograph because the flower 'nods', or points almost directly downward; I was able to lie on my back and get underneath them with a macro lens.   The species has many common names, including spotted mountain bells, purple fritillary, spotted mission bells, and leopard lily.
