Shooting stars

Shooting stars(Dodecatheon sp.) are common spring flowers in grasslands and hillsides in southern California. These were photographed on the Santa Rosa Plateau, near Temecula; the individual above was shot in both sun and shade. Considerable natural color variation is apparent among shooting stars; some flowers are almost white while others are much more intensely pigmented.
