Prickly poppy        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Prickly poppy is a common plant in dry areas in the western US.   It has large, showy white flowers growing on extremely spiny stems, and is frequently found along roads and in other disturbed areas.   The flowers attract many insects, including native bees and non-native honeybees (as in one of these photos).   These were growing in Long Vally, at the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada in California's Mono County.
