California poppies        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Huge displays of California poppies emerge during the spring of years with good winter rains.  These images were taken at several locations in southern California, including near Murietta, Lake Elsinore, and the Motte Reserve, a University of California field station near Perris.   Several other places in California can support spectacular poppy displays, most notably the California Poppy Reserve in the Antelope Valley.
