Owls-clover        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Owls-clover (Castilleja exserta) is a characteristic spring annual in grasslands in California.  It is semi-parasitic, but does have green leaves (unlike some completely parasitic plants).   These were growing on the Santa Rosa Plateau near Temecula.
