Manzanita blossoms        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Several species of manzanita (Arctostaphylos) are found in California and other western states.   They were common where I grew up and I've always thought they were very attractive, with shiny green leaves, smooth, convoluted reddish branches, and small clusters of pinkish flowers in spring.   These were photographed near Mammoth Lakes in eastern California.
