Desert ironwood blossoms        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Most of the time, desert ironwoods (Olneya tesota) are typical desert trees:   low growing, highly branched, and with small, pale-colored dusty-greenish leaves.   However, after good winter rains, they can put on an amazing show of lush purplish flowers that resemble pea blossoms (a relative).   This one was photographed at the south entrance to Joshua Tree National Park in southern California.
