Chocolate lily        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Chocolate lilies (Fritillaria biflora)are exotic-looking plants that are very sparsely distributed in southern California grasslands and meadows.   Externally the flowers are shiny brown, reddish, or purplish brown; inside there is an intricate pattern that often can only be seen if one lies underneath the flower stalks.  These were photographed at the Santa Rosa Plateau reserve near Temecula.
