Blazing star        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Blazingstar (Mentzelia laevicaulis) grows in dry, disturbed habitats (like the sides of gravel roads) in the Great Basin, and the showy yellow flowers stand out against the landscape.   These were growing near Mono Lake, in eastern California.   A quite different-looking relative, sand blazing-star can be found in southwestern deserts.
