Datura        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Datura, or Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) is a common plant in southwestern deserts and much of the rest of North America (and elsewhere), known for its sweet smell and its toxic (or perhaps hallucinogenic) properties.   Native Americans are reputed to have used this plant as part of religious rituals.   The large flowers are mainly white, but in some areas have subtle purple tinges, as seen here.   I photographed these in the Box Springs Mountains in Riverside, California.
