Bigelow's monkeyflower,   Mimulus bigelovii        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Many species of monkeyflowers (Mimulus) are found in the western US; this one is Bigelow's monkeyflower (M. bigelovii).   Unlike many Mimulus (which are usually found in moist places), Bigelow's monkeyflower is a desert annual.   These were photographed in Joshua Tree National Park and the nearby Anza-Borrego State Park, both in southeastern California and near Mono Lake, east of Yosemite.
Another attractive southern California Mimulus is the red bush monkeflower.
