Chipmunks are an attractive and species-rich group, especially in mountainous regions in the western US; other species occur in eastern North America and in Eurasia.  I think this is the yellow-cheeked chipmunk, but can't be sure because more than one chipmunk species occurs in the same area and some can't be told apart from images, or even in hand.   Yellow-cheeked chipmunks are large, dark, and fairly dull-colored as chipmunks go, and are generally found quite close to the coast.   This one paused very briefly on a stump in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in coastal far northern California.   Chipmunk species pictured on this site include:
